  • What to Bring to Sports Camp

    Clothing and Equipment List

Campers must bring the following articles of clothing and equipment to camp:
    1. 1 backpack (an old one that goes over the shoulder – nothing new)
    2. 1 pair athletic shoes with molded cleats (no detachable cleats)
    3. 2 pair non‑marking basketball shoes (in case one gets wet or causes blisters)
    4. 1 pair of sandals (for swimming – Teva-type sandals work the best)
    5. 2 pair cheap flip flops (helps in showers)
    6. 1 pair of pajamas (which they never wear  boxers are fine)
    7. 1 sweatshirt or warm jacket (in case it gets cool or rains)
    8. 2 or 3 swimsuits (one for Barbee, one for outdoor pool, and one left on dorm)
    9. 1 dozen athletic socks
    10. 1 pair shorts (w/pockets)  The pair they wear opening day will be great.
    11. 1 dozen. under shorts
    12. (suggestion:  athletic compression shorts helps with any chafing during an athletic day)
    13. 1 blanket (linens are provided)
    14. 1 pillow
    15. bathroom articles (soap, shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, etc.)
    16. stamps, postcards, pens
    17. towels

    Athletic Shoes

Boys must bring a well-fitted athletic shoe with molded cleats. It is extremely important that shoes (cleated and basketball) must be well broken in before camp. Please do not make the mistake of purchasing shoes right before camp. Blisters are painful and your son could have several bad days ahead of him.

Send two pairs of good basketball shoes. Again, these must be well broken in. A dry pair should be available to avoid blisters. Be certain they are well marked! Should your son have an old pair that can be worn in the rain if necessary, please send them.

Special Notes on Clothing and Laundry Facilities

Small articles of clothing such as underwear, socks, pajamas, etc. will be washed here each week. We do not send clothing to an outside laundry  therefore; campers will be required to bring very little personal clothing. Campers wear their camp uniform throughout the day and evening, including meals. Campers generally change their uniform two or three times a day.

It is absolutely essential that each piece of clothing and equipment be marked! Nametags are the only reliable method of marking clothing. Athletic shoes must also be marked with magic marker.  Please do not neglect to do this; shoes and baseball caps are the items most frequently lost or misplaced. You will not need to pack shorts or shirts for him. He will be in a camp uniform the entire camp. He will go home in the personal shorts he wears to camp opening day and a camp shirt.

We do provide equipment, but many campers have a favorite glove or lacrosse stick they will want to bring.

    What not to send:

    Cell phones
If your son travel travels to camp with one, have him return it to you before you depart campus or turn it in to his counselor on opening day. Possession of these devices is not permitted during camp as they detract from a key aspect of camp  building meaningful relationships with the other boys at camp.

    Food and Gum
We provide campers with two snacks and three meals a day and a visit to the Fir Tree most evenings. They have plenty of food. We want to encourage healthy eating along with fitness so we remove sodas from the Fir Tree. Please do not send a lot of junk food. Last year, there was an excessive amount of food in the dorm rooms, which remained uneaten and in many cases created a big mess.  If food packages become a problem, we reserve the right to deal with it how we see fit. Care packages can be a link to home and fun, but please keep it to a reasonable quantity.

FOOD ITEMS THAT WILL BE DISCARDED IMMEDIATELY: Soda, gum, sunflower seeds, or anything with peanuts. These items have caused problems in the past.

    OTHER ITEMS PROHIBITED ON DORM:
    spray deodorant and shaving cream
expensive cameras (disposable cameras work great, though!)
    flashlights
laundry bags (We have bags used by the school, additional bags may confuse the laundry procedure.)
    knives
    footlockers
anything with wheels (rollerblades, skateboards, etc.)
    water balloons
    water guns

We urge you to avoid sending items of great value. The campers/counselors are out of the dorms most of the day and evening.

Woodberry Compass runs Saturday, June 14 - Saturday, June 21, 2025

    Campers
    Rising 7th, 8th, and 9th graders

    Camp Description

Full-time Woodberry faculty members—innovative and exciting teachers—will lead participants through experiences that connect them to nature, to their peers, and to the wider world.

Our counselors are exclusively young Woodberry alumni and high-performing seniors known for their deep engagement and leadership ability. These young men of character will guide campers through their time at Compass, showing them what it means to lead with empathy and honor.

    Your son will:
    • Learn about watershed ecosystems while fly-fishing.
    • Work with a team to create solutions to epic design problems.
    • Develop his approach to leadership and decide what kind of impact he’d like to have on his community back home.

Woodberry Compass asks middle school boys to dive deep into new challenges on our picturesque 1,200-acre Virginia campus.

Each day, campers take on two main activities, one from the Adventure category and one from the Intellect category. In the morning, they'll either hike the Perimeter Trail, romp in the Rapidan River, or scale our Climbing Tower. After lunch, boys will work in teams as they learn to code and fly drones through obstacle courses, and explore video journalism as they write, film, and edit their own vlog about their camp experience.

In the evening, the whole camp comes together for a Leadership Simulation. Boys immerse themselves in roles that interact—and sometimes conflict—with one another. With help from counselors and camp faculty, they'll learn how to work together to overcome these conflicts and accomplish team goals.
