"I'm delighted we will have such a strong leadership team in place for the fiftieth anniversary of sports camp," Headmaster Byron Hulsey ’86 says. "Matt, Amy, and Frazier will continue our long tradition of caring, committed camp leaders who put the boys first."
Woodberry Forest Sports Camp was established in 1967 by Red and Cathy Caughron, a pair of legendary educators who devoted thirty-one years to the school. While committed to winning, Coach Caughron was even more invested in developing young men of sterling character who played by the rules and exhibited good sportsmanship.
Working closely with the co-directors will be Janet Lewis, who will be serving on the Sports Camp team for the twenty-fifth consecutive year. Janet and Frazier will help ensure the camp’s purpose and philosophy remain consistent. The fiftieth anniversary will be celebrated with a special event during sports camp. Details of that event will be announced later this year.
Frazier, a 2004 graduate who returned to Woodberry as director of admissions this summer, joined the camp staff in 2005; he served as its assistant director from 2007 to 2015. He also attended sports camp for two years. His wife, Meghan, is a sixth grade teacher at Grymes Memorial School in Orange.
“This is my fifteenth summer of Sports Camp, and I’m thrilled about that,” Frazier said. “It’s a special culture, climate, and experience that I really enjoy. I’m very happy and privileged to share that with boys and their families.”
Matt Blundin became Woodberry’s athletic director in July 2016. Before joining Woodberry, he was the lead instructional coach for Albemarle County Public Schools and supervised the district’s athletic directors. He also served as a math instructional coach and a math teacher while working as the head basketball coach and an assistant football coach at Monticello High School in the district. He also has extensive experience as a youth coach in several sports. Matt played football and basketball at the University of Virginia before spending three seasons in the National Football League. Along with his position as co-director of sports camp, Matt will serve as the director of all summer athletic programs.
“This is a great opportunity to get to know boys who may be interested in eventually becoming Woodberry students,” Matt said. “And I’m excited about working with so many boys in athletics at such an exciting age.”
Amy Blundin has experience as a summer camp director for Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Albemarle County, Virginia, where she and Matt are parishioners. Amy was a competitive tennis player in high school and a competitive runner after college. She has also coached baseball and football at the middle school level.
The Blundins are the parents of four boys. The youngest will be a camper in 2017, while the other three sons will join the sports camp staff.
"Sports Camp is an incredibly special part of Woodberry," Byron says. "This year we will celebrate the camp’s fifty-year legacy and the values first established by Mr. and Mrs. Caughron and continued by Bill and Debbie Davis and by Clint and Elaine Alexander. I’m excited this year's campers will experience those values first hand."
