Residence Roof Repair Uncovers Historic Materials

The Residence, Woodberry Forest School's historic home designed by Thomas Jefferson and built by William Madison, brother of President James Madison, is receiving significant repairs this summer. Workers replacing its metal roof were intrigued to discover that the original roof sheathing boards, in place and in use since the building’s construction in 1793, are feathered on the top and bottom horizontal edges. This unique feathering provided additional weatherproofing to the roof, which was originally covered with hand-split wooden shingles until replaced with metal sometime in the mid-nineteenth century. The hand-wrought nails used to fasten the sheathing and trim in place are similar in appearance to those made in Thomas Jefferson’s nailery at Monticello.
