Senior Volunteers in Japan

Luke Merrick '14 of Charlottesville, Virginia, spent five weeks in Japan this summer, dividing his time between Tokyo, where he visited the family of his Woodberry roommate, Keita Yagi '14, and Takayama, where he volunteered on an organic farm. Under the auspices of WWOOF (Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms), Luke lived with the Suwa family for three weeks, helping them with duties like cultivating rice, harvesting vegetables, and selling farm produce on market days. On his days off, Luke visited nearby museums, temples, and onsens or hotspring footbaths. Luke, who taught himself Japanese, got plenty of practice speaking and reading the language.
