Students Recognized and Rewarded for Service

Woodberry Forest School students Badham Dixon '15 and Jimmy Boehling '14 have been recognized by Hearthsong, a children's toy company owned by Plow and Hearth, based in nearby Madison, Virginia, because of their work to raise money to build a school in Sierra Leone.

Hearthsong produced a video profiling the boys, along with other young people, to kick off its Heartsong Heroes program, which will provide support and visibility to service groups started by kids. It opens with a quote from Anne Frank -- “How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” -- and features interviews with the boys and footage of them on the athletic fields. Hearthsong videographer Richard Needham came to campus on May 6, 2013, to screen the video for Badham and Jimmy and then surprised the boys with a check for $1000. They report that this contribution brings them very close to their goal of raising $8,500, which will, through the international charity Free the Children, build a school in the developing African nation.

The boys hope the video, when it goes public this summer, will help encourage other Tigers to undertake similar community service projects.
