New Faculty

Ten new teachers have joined the faculty at Woodberry for the 2003-04 school year.

Nathaniel A. Ebel
B.A, Baylor University
M.A., University of Virginia
English

A Magna Cum Laude graduate of Baylor University, Mr. Ebel has a master’s degree in English from the University of Virginia. Fluent in Spanish, he taught English as a Second Language in Mendoza, Argentina. During the summer he has managed a llama packing business in the San Juan and Uncompaghre mountains of Southern Colorado. He coaches basketball and football. Mr. Ebel lives on A Dorm of the Walker Building.

Colin Gay ’93
B.A., M.Ed., University of Virginia
Algebra, Technology, Learning Skills Specialist

An honor-roll student and Prefect while he was a student at Woodberry Forest, Mr. Gay also played varsity football, lacrosse and wrestled. He has worked as a math teacher at Langley High School, created a web site to help students improve their standardized test scores and tutored at-risk students in match. A studio art major at the University of Virginia, he earned a minor in architecture. He serves as a coach of football, wrestling and lacrosse. He lives in Charlottesville.

Matthew J. Gould
B.A. Trinity College
Development

A graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy, Mr. Gould studied Russian at Trinity College, where he played varsity lacrosse for four years and varsity soccer for two years. He studied Russian at the Middlebury College language school in Moscow. During his time in Russia, Mr. Gould was an intern with a commercial property investment firm. Prior to coming to Woodberry, he was in the financial services industry in Boston. Mr. Gould lives on B Dorm in the Walker Building.

Aloysius Heil
B.A., Rheinish-Westfalisch Technische Hochule
German

After a thirteen year career as an international business executive, Mr. Heil decided to become a teacher. He has teaching experience in schools in Germany, France and United States, including teaching German to foreign nationals in Germany. A native of Germany, Mr. Heil enjoys mountaineering, theater and cooking. He and his wife, Sylke, have a daughter, Sandra, and a son, Rudy. They reside in Culpepper.

Andrew R. Handelsman
B.A., Dartmouth College
M.A., University of Southern Mississippi
Spanish

Mr. Handelsman teaches Spanish and assists in the baseball program. Prior to coming to Woodberry, he taught at Westridge School for Girls in Pasadena, California, The Webb Schools in Claremont, California and Marvelwood School in Cornwall, Connecticut. He has led high school groups on trips to Spain and Mexico. An affectionario of Afro-Cuban music, he also enjoys golf, tennis and chess. Mr. Handelsman and his wife, Melanie, live in the New Duplex with their son, Tommy.

Andrew R. Hilgartner
B.A., Michigan State University
Assistant Director of Admissions

A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Mr. Hilgartner graduated from Michigan State University where he was captain , MVP and leading scorer of the lacrosse team in his senior year. He has served as head lacrosse coach at Sewickley Academy, where he served as co-dean of students. Immediately prior to joining the Woodberry faculty, Mr. Hilgartner was director of admissions and a lacrosse coach at St. Mary’s School in Annapolis, Maryland. Mr. Hilgartner lives in the Dowd Apartment.

Nat Hoopes
B.A., Princeton University
History

A Massachusetts native, Mr. Hoopes is a high honors graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy and Princeton University. A history major in college, Mr. Hoopes was captain of the golf team, Ivy League Individual Champion, and an Academic All-American. He played on teams that won the Ivy league championship three years in a row. Mr. Hoopes has held internships at The Christian Science Monitor and the Center for Strategic International Studies. He coaches basketball and golf at Woodberry and lives in Taylor Hall.

James T. Jenkins, Jr.
B.A., Davidson College
English

Mr. Jenkins was student body president, class president and a member of the Cum Laude Society when he was a student at St. Andrews School in Delaware. He studied English at Davidson College, where he was active in student organizations and philanthropic fundraising. Mr. Jenkins has studied abroad in both Mexico and Hong Kong. He has worked as a communications assistant and admissions assistant at St. Andrew’s School. At Woodberry, Mr. Jenkins, an intern in summer school in 2001, works with the swim team. He lives on Taylor Hall.

Charles P. Vaughters ’99
B.A., Rice University
Assistant Director of Admissions

Captain of both the tennis and cross country teams while he was a student at Woodberry Forest, Mr. Vaughters also won the Spanish Award and Admission Service Cup at Commencement. While a student at Rice University, he established a tutoring company that employed 17 individuals and provided services to elementary, middle and high school students. He has had internships in commercial real estate, legal research and congressional correspondence. He and his wife, Ann, a medical student at UVA, live in Keswick.

Gretchen R. Warner
B.S., Virginia Tech
M.S., University of Virginia
Chemistry

Gretchen R. Warner is teaching Chemistry in the science department. A graduate of Mercersburg Academy, Ms. Warner holds an undergraduate degree from Virginia Tech and a master's degree in chemistry from the University of Virginia. Ms. Warner, a champion swimmer at Mercersburg,, will coach swimming at Woodberry.
