Play Descriptions: Two plays written by Brent Cirves, chair of Woodberry’s fine arts department, and scored by Michael J. Johnson ’05, are currently in rehearsal at Woodberry before they premiere at fringe festivals in Washington, D.C., and New York later this summer.
The Fall of the House of Usher, a dramatic musical based on Edgar Allan Poe's famous short story, and Exiles from the Sun, a family drama, will be staged at the D.C. Capital Fringe July 11-24 and at the New York International Fringe Festival August 14-19. Both productions, which feature several actors and technicians who are Woodberry graduates, will be produced in part by the school.
Cirves’s plays are the first by a single writer and director to be staged in repertory in the same theater by the New York International Fringe Festival.
“Our cast and crew will become gypsies or exiles this summer as we move from one city to the other,” Cirves said. “We have our work cut out for us, but it's going to be an amazing adventure. We'll be playing in two beautiful theaters in D.C. and N.Y.C.—a 'recovered space' in an 1840s building in Washington, and a miniature Victorian opera house in New York."
