Hundreds Enjoy Campus as Fall Draws to a Close

The final weeks of fall brought a steady stream of visitors to Woodberry Forest.

October 28-29 was the Third- and Fourth-Form Parents' Weekend, with Tiger families new and old enjoying their visit. Tie cutting is always a highlight of the weekend, as nearly 130 new boys had their black ties ritually shredded before the donned the orange and black for the first time.

The following weekend brought a slightly older crowd, as Grandparents' Day returned for the first time since 2019. More than 250 grandparents enjoyed musical performances, remarks by Headmaster Byron Hulsey '86, and a look at Woodberry history with Richard Barnhardt '66. After a delicious lunch in the dining hall, boys and their grandparents explored campus, watched JV football host Fork Union Military Academy, or caught a matinee of Antigone, the fall play.

And, last but certainly not least campus was buzzing ahead of the bonfire and the 121st playing of The Game. From torchmaking on Sunday afternoon to the excitement of JV football's victory over the Maroon on Thursday, the entire Tiger nation was ready to go. An extra dose of excitement came on Thursday as Woodberry hosted the VISAA cross country championships. The Tigers finished ninth in the top division, with Taylor Myers '23 finishing in fifth place overall.

The remnants of a tropical storm turned Friday into a soaker. Thanks to incredible work by the golf and grounds crew, the bonfire and all four hundred torches were carefully wrapped and covered to ensure Friday night's festivities would go smoothly. But fortune appeared to favor the community that night. A morning of heavy rain gave way to clearer skies in mid-afternoon, and a late shower concluded at 9:45 p.m., just as the students began to assembly. Though the ground was wet, the bonfire was conducted under dry skies and in unseasonably warm weather. Science teacher Jim Reid, who has helped build more than forty-five bonfire, threw the ceremonial first torch.

The weekend ended on a disappointing note as the Tigers fell to the Maroon 24-8. Episcopal, which won its conference title this year, stifled the Tiger offense and was able to scratch out points through an outstanding first half touchdown catch and a long drive late in the third quarter. A third touchdown came after a Tiger interception as the team tried to come back. With the Maroon victory, the all time record is now 59-53-9 in Woodberry's favor.
