Regional Chapters: Summertime Fun Around the Tiger Nation

The Tiger nation enjoyed a summer of events including minor and major league baseball and young alumni networking.

In the Triad Chapter, alumni from six different decades, parents, families, students, and prospective students enjoyed an evening of Dash versus Grasshopper minor league baseball. Father-son pairs Sandlin ’97, Mills, and Borden Douglas and Ben ’01, Peter, and Lewis Noland attended the night before their trek to campus for Woodberry’s Father-Son Weekend.

Foul balls were a big part of the evening with Jamie Mills doing his best to shield some direct hits as wife Beth, and children Paul ’23, Cash ’26, and Presley watched. Chris Green ‘88, Triad president, was a terrific host, and many stayed well into the seventh inning like Virgil and Eyanna Lessane, parents of Connor ‘22 and Braeden ‘23.

“I think this was the right event to bring together the Winston-Salem, Greensboro, and High Point folks. It’s always great to reconnect with guys at Woodberry like David Broughton ‘86 and Bill Klutz ‘89,” Chris said.

Meanwhile, in New York City, it was the leadership of Holden Fockler ‘16 that assembled a NYC Chapter summer intern social event. Pizza and beverages in the West Village provided the perfect informal setting for alumni currently in college and interning in the city to connect with area alumni.

“It was important to show how tight-knit the Woodberry network is, to make them excited about New York City as a place to live post college, and to be a sounding board for different career opportunities,” said Holden. “I had a great conversation with Dylan Yen ‘19, currently attending NYU, about his internship at PriceWaterhouseCoopers."

Gunnar Gregory ‘07, chapter president, and Sean Spector ‘12, engagement chair, were among other local alumni in attendance who shared their career advice and perspectives with recently graduated Tigers.

Finally, the World Champion Braves versus the Mets was the scene of the Atlanta Chapter summer event organized by recently appointed chapter president Pierce Lancaster ‘02.  This chapter, known for consistently strong attendance at events, had over forty alumni and guests join for a beautiful evening at Truist Park to enjoy the Braves win. Rumor is there may be a return of the Ottley Oyster Roast this fall, so stay tuned if you're in the Atlanta area!
