A Summer on Campus Filled with Tiger Spirit

Since Red and Cathy Caughron established the Woodberry Forest Sports Camp in the 1960s, summers at the Forest have always been filled with adventure.

This year brought an extra dose of excitement as Woodberry Compass got off to a successful start.

Compass was designed as a way for prospective students to better understand the full range of life at Woodberry. While Sports Camp is a time-tested institution, it focuses primarily on athletics and team spirit. Compass takes a slightly wider look at the Woodberry experience, offering campers the chance to work with talented faculty, explore our expansive campus, develop leadership talents, and live the Woodberry honor system.

The four points of our “compass” should feel familiar to any Woodberry alumnus: Honor, Adventure, Intellect, and Leadership. These concepts might seem esoteric, but distilling them into a fast-paced and fun summer camp experience was surprisingly natural.

While the Compass boys and their counselors ranged across campus and the surrounding countryside, including Shenandoah National Park, Sports Camp, under the direction of Amy and Matt Blundin, was filled as always with competition and excitement. The buzz from the campers and the Woodberry students and alumni working as counselors is infectious, whether it's at a Friday-night campfire or during the waning moments of a final.

Father-Son Weekend, which has quickly established itself as one of Woodberry's most popular summer options, enjoyed splendid weather in early June. The camp has sold out the past few years, so make your reservations early if you and your son want to join us. This year more than half of the attending dads were not Woodberry grads, so please bring along your friends and their sons for this exciting event!

Craig Dawson, Woodberry's varsity basketball coach, hosted another highly successful basketball camp, drawing aspiring hoopsters from around the region. Woodberry plans to reintroduce football and lacrosse camps next year to accompany basketball.

Information on all of Woodberry's summer camps can be found at www.woodberry.org/camps.
