I graduated from WFS in 1961, U.Va. in 1965, U.Va. law in 1968, and went into the Army (ROTC at U.Va.) as a first lieutenant in September 1968. Spent nine weeks at Ft. Benning, Georgia, training to be an infantry officer at IOBC, seven weeks at Ft. Holabird, Maryland, in counter intelligence, then six months as the DLIWC learning to write and speak Vietnamese.
Upon arriving in Vietnam in late September 1969, I became deputy phoenix coordinator for Long Khanh Province, then became phoenix coordinator in March 1970. I lived in Xuan Loc, home of the 18th ARVN Division, for the entire year. I got this Bronze Star for my service there.
The picture is of me and three of my other phoenix guys at our Phung Hoang office in Xuan Loc.
I tell people that the three most transformational events in my life were my marriage (43 years now), WFS, and a year in Vietnam.
