Dave Mabe Welcomed to College Counseling Office

Dave Mabe, an experienced college admissions professional, has been named Woodberry Forest's new associate director of college counseling. He joins Phil Hooper, who was named the school's director of college counseling a few weeks ago. In addition to his work in college counseling, Mr. Mabe will also be providing overall leadership of Woodberry's summer programming as the school works through the strategic plan to add academic and arts offerings to complement the well-established and very successful sports camps. "I'm delighted to welcome Dave to Woodberry," said Headmaster Byron Hulsey '86. "Dave's perspective on education, his inclination to think strategically, and his ability to connect personally with the boys and their families make him a wonderful addition to the team."

Mr. Mabe comes to Woodberry from the Morehead-Cain Foundation at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he is director of scholar selection for its highly-prestigious scholarship. He previously worked as associate dean of admissions at Bowdoin College, served as a policy research fellow at the New England Board of Higher Education, and was assistant dean of admission and financial aid at Davidson College. Mr. Mabe graduated from Davidson with a bachelor of arts in English and from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education.

"I'm thrilled that Dave Mabe will be joining Phil Hooper, Renee Sullivan, Lindsay O'Sullivan, and me in Woodberry's college counseling office," said Scott G. Schamberger, assistant headmaster for admissions and college counseling. "Dave's unique blend of experiences at a number of world-class colleges and universities will prove extremely valuable for the boys we serve. It was clear in the interview process that our boys will naturally gravitate toward Dave's personality."

Mr. Mabe's wife, Molly, currently serves as the assistant director of alumni and board engagement at the University of North Carolina's Kenan-Flagler Business School. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Asheville with a bachelor of arts degree in studio art, and from Tufts University with a master of arts in museum education. The Mabes will move to campus in mid-August.
