Robins to Become Head LAX Coach and Assistant Admissions Director
Spotswood “Spotty” Robins ’04 will return to Woodberry Forest from the Collegiate School in Richmond, Virginia. At his alma mater, Mr. Robins will serve as assistant director of admissions and as head coach of the varsity lacrosse team. “It’s an honor,” Mr. Robins says, “to return to Woodberry Forest, and I am excited for the opportunity to help young men grow as people and athletes at a school that means so much to me.”
After graduating from Woodberry, Spotty attended Washington and Lee University, majoring in American history, playing lacrosse, and graduating in 2008. Over four years at Collegiate, Mr. Robins served in the history department, coached football, basketball, and varsity lacrosse, and is currently Robins Campus and Cougar Sports Zone coordinator. In 2014 Mr. Robins graduated with his MEd from the Virginia Commonwealth University Center for Sport Leadership. He has also served as a volunteer assistant lacrosse coach at Randolph Macon College and Amped Lacrosse in Richmond.
Coach Robins will be succeeding Brian Hemming as varsity lacrosse coach at Woodberry. At the conclusion of the past school year, Coach Hemming, who also serves as athletic director, informed Headmaster Byron Hulsey that the coming year would be his last at Woodberry, as he and his family are eager to pursue new opportunities after nine years of service at the Forest. Coach Hemming encouraged the recruitment of a new head coach, so that the Woodberry lacrosse team can begin planning for the longer term right away.
“I want to thank Brian for his excellent service to Woodberry as athletic director and head lacrosse coach,” says Dr. Hulsey. “I am eager and excited to welcome Coach Robins back to Woodberry and to work with both Brian and Spotty to assure a seamless transition forward for our lacrosse team.” Woodberry will plan a search for a new athletic director to begin service on July 1, 2016.
