Coming Through the Rye Wraps Up Woodberry Scenes

Three weeks of hosting the cast and crew of Coming Through the Rye, a feature film by James Sadwith, is coming to an end for Woodberry Forest.

A large portion of the student body, along with many faculty and staff members, served as actors, stand-ins, and extras in the film which stars Alex Wolff, Stefania Owen, and Academy Award winner Chris Cooper. And the campus itself, transformed into the fictional Crampton Prep, features prominently in the movie which takes its inspiration from J.D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye. Exterior scenes were shot in Armfield Courtyard and via aerial drones, while interior footage was shot in the Dick Gym, Bowman Gray Auditorium, St. Andrew's Chapel, the Walker Building Lobby, and the Reynolds Family Dining Room.

Among the student actors chosen for speaking parts was Jared Thalwitz ’16 who played Benvolio in Woodberry's recent production of Romeo and Juliet; he reprised the role on camera for Crampton Prep's version of the play. "Acting is something I'm very interested in," said Jared, a Woodberry stage veteran who has never had a film role. "I'm very excited to have this opportunity!" Christian Magnani ’15 also got a role he was well-prepared to play. The varsity football player, who first acted on stage in last winter's Woodberry production of The Drowsy Chaperone, plays Football Player #1 in Coming Through the Rye. "I've always wanted to be in a movie," Christian said. "I've just never really gotten the chance." A third Woodberry student, Cole Lenfest ’15, also snagged a speaking role.

Headmaster Byron Hulsey ’86 called the experience of having a movie crew use the Woodberry campus "a significant opportunity for connection to the cinematic arts." Coming Through the Rye is slated for release in 2015.
