CASA Program Underway

Eleven Spanish II students are participating in Woodberrry Forest School's eighth annual Central American Summer Abroad, a Spanish learning and service trip to Nicaragua. Under the guidance of Woodberry Spanish teachers Raphael Sydnor and Jairo Rivera, the boys arrived on June 1, 2014, for a three-week cultural immersion, language study, and community service experience. The first week of the program has seen participants eating local specialties, visiting a cigar factory, attempting to throw pots at a ceramics studio, and ordering custom boots at a leather-working shop. They've begun their community service efforts in schools in Estelí where they have been distributing donated athletic and tech equipment; teaching English; and coaching baseball, soccer, and basketball.

The need to communicate with students and homestay families has led to remarkable progress in the boys' language skills. "It is amazing to see how far they have come in so little time," remarked Raphael. "I can’t wait to see what these guys are capable of after three weeks!"
