Pulitzer Prize-Winning Author Tracy Kidder Visits Woodberry

Tracy Kidder, author of Woodberry Forest School's all-school summer reading selection Strength in What Remains, addressed students and faculty on Monday, October 8, 2012. Mr. Kidder, whose long and prolific career has produced several works of literary journalism, retold the story of the subject of the book, Deo, who survived Burundi's genocide and eventually attended Columbia University, became a doctor, and founded Village Healthworks, a health clinic in his native village. He shared photos of the clinic and its construction and spoke about the challenges of writing about Deo's haunting memories of suffering and about returning with Deo to his homeland.  After the talk, students took the opportunity to meet the author and have him sign their copies of the book.
