Woodberry Forest School Appoints Matt Blundin as Next Athletic Director

Matt Blundin, a standout athlete and educator, has been appointed the next athletic director of Woodberry Forest School.

Blundin played quarterback at the University of Virginia, serving as a co-captain and winning the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year award in his final season. He was selected in the second round of the NFL draft by the Kansas City Chiefs and also played for the Detroit Lions.

Blundin was a member of UVa’s basketball team, starting at forward on a squad that reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. He was a co-captain of the basketball team during his final season. He was a Dean’s List student and lived on the Lawn while majoring in mathematics.

“Our family is very excited to become a member of the Woodberry Forest School family,” Blundin said. “I am looking forward to learning as an educator and leader alongside this wonderful staff in support of dynamic academic and athletic experiences for the students.”

At the conclusion of his NFL career, Blundin returned to Charlottesville and completed a master’s degree at Virginia’s Curry School of Education in secondary mathematics education. He has worked for Albemarle County Public Schools since 1999 as a mathematics teacher and instructional coach, serving since 2012 as the district’s lead instructional coach. In that role he oversees professional development for instructional coaches and teachers while serving as a liaison for the district’s athletic directors.

Headmaster Byron Hulsey ’86 said Blundin’s teaching, coaching, and playing backgrounds made him the perfect fit for Woodberry’s athletics program.

“I am thrilled to welcome Matt Blundin and his family to Woodberry Forest,” Hulsey said. “From his days as a two-sport star at the University of Virginia, Matt's life has been about the pursuit of academic and athletic excellence. He and his wife, Amy, care deeply about community, and they have served young people in a wide range of settings over many years. Matt's leadership at Woodberry will challenge all of us to live out the school's ideals on the athletic fields, in the classroom, and in every area of community life."

Hulsey also thanked the members of Woodberry’s search committee, which was chaired by Assistant Headmaster and Dean of Students Joe Coleman ’79. Other members of the committee were Assistant Headmaster for External Affairs and Chief Development Officer Catherine Wharton, Academic Dean Steve Culbertson, Director of Outdoor Education Nolan LaVoie, Trustee Kinny Roper ’73, faculty member Colin Gay '93, and Chip Mark ’75.

Blundin also coaches youth football, basketball, baseball, and lacrosse. He is a youth group leader and Christian education teacher at Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Matt and Amy have four sons: Ethan (18), Cole (17), Luke (14), and Joseph (9).
