Alumni Spotlight: Andrew Woodin ‘04 Debuts a Film with a Tiger Twist

Andrew Woodin ‘04 — writer, creative director, and producer — reveals his passion for film and media, and a dedication to his craft — have paved his road to success and deep fulfillment.

Woodin’s latest project, The Road to Galena, reflects characters in young adulthood caught between following their inner voice, a “calling,” and societal pressure to follow paths more extrinsic in value. The movie provokes viewers to consider that “life doesn’t just happen; it's a series of choices.”

In his own life, Woodin shares Woodberry was one of those choices that continues to be a pivotal force. In the early stages of i project, Woodin says his close friendships with classmates Boyd Steinhoff,  Caylor Mark,  Charlton deSaussure III, and Trevor Slaven, and their collective expertise, were critical to the film’s genesis and success.

Woodin’s own narrative of days at Woodberry includes many dynamic characters mixed with some “dramatic” moments. Life on dorm and countless hours spent viewing classic movies are some simple, yet powerful memories for Woodin.
“Movies just brought us together in a way that broke down any kind of differences,” he said.

Woodberry’s Black Box theater and main stage became a home for his initial foray into theater. And, as for music, the 2004 Fir Tree reveals Woodin as a drummer and guitarist with Street Side Heights, which produced a “triple platinum” album perhaps only in Woodberry lore. Woodin credits many Woodberry faculty for their mentorship, especially those who encouraged his acting in major productions like The Three Musketeers.

Woodin’s story seems to mirror a pivotal scene in The Road to Galena in all the best ways.

“That dream that doesn't go away? Now that’s a calling. Once you realize it, you can’t help but get out of its way.”

The Road to Galena can be viewed on all major cable on demand providers as well as Amazon Prime Video (Link HERE) through October, with future releases in the works for 2023.
