Woodberry Welcomes New Faculty for 130th Year

Woodberry Forest welcomed six new teachers and one member of the office of admission to campus this week ahead of the official opening of school.

Bill Ellis joins Woodberry as senior associate director for admission and tuition assistance. He has enjoyed a long career as an admission officer and for the past decade was associate headmaster for enrollment and financial aid at the Kiski School in Pennsylvania. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Jennifer Hubbard returns to Woodberry’s English department next year, having spent the decade since her departure launching a prizewinning career as a writer of young adult fiction. Jennifer will teach third-form and fifth-form English. Accepting a one-year appointment as Woodberry's first "writer in residence," she will also work with boys to write and produce a black box play. Jennifer, who previously taught at Woodberry from 1995 to 2005, will be coming to campus with her husband, Steve Cobb.

Tommy Kane joins the English department as a Kenan-Lewis Fellow.  Tommy is a recent graduate of Skidmore College, where he majored in English and played lacrosse. He will serve as a dorm master on Dowd-Finch.

Whitney Lane joins the faculty as a member of the science department. Whitney recently finished a Ph.D. in virology at the University of Pittsburgh and will be teaching cellular biology and research biology. A former Division I sprinter and jumper, she will also be coaching the long and triple jumpers on Woodberry's track and field team. Whitney is married to Nishank Bhalla, a medical researcher. She will serve as a dorm parent on Taylor Hall.

Mary Montgomery joins the faculty in a part-time role teaching math and coaching varsity soccer. She is a graduate of the University of Georgia and previously taught math at Asheville School and in the Williamsburg, Virginia public school system. She will serve as a dorm parent on Terry House.

Tyler Montgomery joins the faculty as Woodberry's chaplain and assistant to the headmaster for student wholeness. Tyler comes to Woodberry Forest from Williamsburg, Virginia, where he served as chaplain at the College of William and Mary and associate rector at Bruton Parish Church. In addition to his administrative role, Tyler will teach the school’s Bible course and will coach junior varsity football. He will serve as a dorm parent on Terry House

Natalie Rodriguez-Nelson joins the history department as a Kenan-Lewis Fellow. Natalie is a recent graduate of Princeton University, where she majored in history and completed the Program in Teacher Preparation. She will serve as a dorm parent on the Walker Building.

Woodberry also welcomes Ty Adams and Kristyn Wilson as full-time members of the history and English departments, respectively. Ty, a 2016 graduate of Appalachian State University and the University of Virginia, was a Kenan-Lewis Fellow the past two years. He coaches soccer and baseball and is a dorm parent on Turner Hall. Kristyn, a Morehead Scholar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, was also a Kenan-Lewis Fellow from 2016 to 2018. She holds a masters degree from the University of Virginia, coaches cross country and swimming, and is a dorm parent on Dowd-Finch.
